The construction industry in Egypt has grown steadily during the current decade, largely fuelled by the growth of the country’s tourism industry.
In the mid-1990s, the government awarded larger projects to quality conscious international construction companies, leading to a spurt in infrastructure development. Since then, the construction industry has become one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy, increasing by an average annual rate of 8% since the start of the decade. By the start of 2006, a number of diverse residential, commercial and industrial projects are in the pipeline, making Egypt one of the hottest construction destinations in the Middle East, along with Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait.
